Tour guide systems such as the TOM-Audio® TG-101 with dialog function or our TOM-Audio® TG-200 from BMS Audio are real workhorses - in use on factory tours, cruises, events or city tours. And as with all professionals in continuous use, a little care never hurts. Regular maintenance not only extends the service life of the technology, but also ensures that everything runs smoothly on the next tour - with no dropouts and no excuses.
Cleaning: With sensitivity instead of spray mist
Let's start with the obvious: Tour Guide devices are regularly used, transported and touched by many people. So hygiene is important - but please do it properly:
- Clean the housing: Use a slightly damp cloth (not dripping wet!) with a mild detergent or disinfectant wipes. Important: Never spray directly onto the device - even if you want to do it quickly.
- Lanyards are washable: Our lanyards can be easily washed at a low temperature.
- Protect the display: Avoid alcohol or abrasive agents - this will significantly extend the life of the display.
Battery care: The battery needs attention - but not constant care
Our systems work with lithium-ion batteries - powerful, reliable and long-lasting if you treat them correctly:
- Charging cable: Please only use the chargers and cables supplied.
- Allow a power break: Do not leave devices permanently plugged in - this shortens battery life. Fully charge, then unplug.
- Observe the environment: Do not store or charge in extreme temperatures (not in the car, not on the windowsill).
- Winter transport: After cold transport, bring the devices to room temperature before charging - otherwise there is a risk of cold shock for the battery.
Maintenance: What you can do yourself - and what you'd rather not do
Our Tour Guide systems have a modular design - this makes repairs easier and maintenance particularly economical:
- Replaceable: Housing, buttons and batteries can be easily replaced if necessary.
- Not replaceable: Displays, antennas and electronics from the charging case should only be serviced by us.
- Software updates: Our devices remain up-to-date thanks to update capability. Feel free to ask us about new functions or customisations.
Common care mistakes - and how to avoid them
Despite the best intentions, typical care mistakes happen in everyday life:
- Continuous charging over weeks - batteries lose capacity.
- Storage in the sun or humid environments - leads to damage to the housing and electronics.
- Cleaning with aggressive agents - impairs usability.
- Months of non-use without intermediate charging - deeply discharged batteries can often no longer be reactivated.
Maintenance intervals - how often does it make sense?
You don't need a maintenance diary - a few simple routines are enough:
- After each use: Visual inspection and cleaning of the surface.
- Weekly: Check battery status and charge if necessary.
- Monthly: A complete charge/discharge cycle.
- For longer storage periods: Store devices in a dry place with a battery level of around 40-60%.
Sustainability through maintenance instead of replacement
Technical devices have an ecological footprint - especially in production. With good maintenance and repair instead of buying new, you can make an active contribution to sustainability. Many components of our Tour Guide systems are modularly replaceable - so that your investment is preserved in the long term.

Conclusion: Maintenance saves time, costs and avoids breakdowns
Maintaining our tour guide systems is neither time-consuming nor complicated - but it makes sense. Whether cleaning, battery maintenance or software updates: A few minutes a week will significantly extend the service life of the devices and make your guided tours even more professional.
